During the Victorian era, black jewellery became especially fashionable, particularly in mourning dress. Alongside natural Whitby jet, jewellers also used highly polished black glass known as French jet to create the same deep, elegant appearance.
This brooch combines that glossy black glass with a classical cameo profile and an ornate gold-tone setting — a very characteristic Victorian contrast of black, gold and antique-inspired portraiture.
